Edmond Halley predicted that Halley's Comet was in fact a comet, however there is evidence that exists that it was observed by ancient astronomers. Halley's Comet passes by Earth every 75 to 76 years, classifying it as a short-period comet. Like planets, some comets orbit the sun on a predictable schedule. Halley's Comet, the most famous of these weird wanderers, drops by Earth every 75 years or so (it’s not due for its next visit until July 2061). As a comet nears the sun, ice and dust boil from its slushy center—called a nucleus—to form an atmosphere known as a coma.

Halley is the only known short-period comet that is regularly visible to the naked eye from Earth, and the only naked-eye comet that can appear twice in a human lifetime. Halley last appeared in the inner parts of the Solar System in 1986 and will next appear in mid Fact 22: The Kuiper Belt is a ring made up of dormant comets located just beyond the orbit of Neptune . The comets originating here have orbits lasting some hundreds of years or fewer. Fact 23: Notable comets include Comet Hale-Bopp, which was discovered in 1995 and Comet Hyakutake, discovered in 1996 and Halley’s comet reported by Edmund Halley in the 18th century.

But fear not, that’s what we’re here to learn about today! Check out these top 20 facts about comets and find out what they’re made of, where they come from and some of the famous comets. FACT #7: Comets have two tails -- not one. As comets approach the sun, solar wind and the sun's magnetic field sweep particles from the coma into tails that stretch behind the comet's head. Dust particles form a curved tail that can stretch up to 60 million miles in length.

The main body of the comet is called the nucleus, and it can contain water, methane, nitrogen and other ices. Check out these top 20 facts about comets and find out what they’re made of, where they come from and some of the famous comets. A comets center or nucleus is made of ice and vary greatly in size per comet, ranging from a few meters, to kilometers wide. Comets lose mass each time they get close to the sun due to a process called sublimation. Fact # 5. A comet’s core is like a dirty snowball. The nucleus of a comet is composed of ice, dust, and rock — debris left over from when the solar system formed 4.6 billion years ago.

When a comet comes close to the Sun, the ices sublimate (go directly from the solid to the gas phase) and form, along with entrained dust particles, a bright outflowing atmosphere around the comet nucleus known as a coma.

Comet ISON's dust tail is believed to span about 57,000 miles.
